The reason was that they didn't want a person who had served their time to have a stigma of being a "criminal" for the rest of their lives, unlike our system today. The thought was that once you served your sentence, your debt was paid, and you could go on to do anything you wanted without any loss of rights(voting, owning a gun, etc). If your crime was bad enough, you were hung instead of living on the state's dollar for the rest of your life. Seems alot more humane and conducive to punishing the evil doers, and reforming those who may have transgressed to me. And yes I've been there.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
